Asperger’s (ASD) and related Learning Disorders

If you are a parent of a child with a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome Disorder or a learning disability, finding help in the Greater Toronto Area is quite a challenge. You are overwhelmed with the task – perhaps having just learned that you or your child meets criteria for special services. This can be a good time to enlist the help of a quarterback – you are going to be building a team!

Children or adults on the spectrum formerly known as having Asperger’s syndrome (now classified as ASD) have a number of symptoms that can make navigating through life a challenge: social impairment, communication difficulties, and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. These begin to be noticed in the early years, and continue to affect their ability to be successful at school or later in work roles and in their relationships.

Children or adults with learning disorders (sometimes called learning differences) display a wide variety of traits, depending on whether the difference is verbal, non verbal, sensory – sometimes one of the biggest challenges is that it is hidden! A person with a learning disorder might be frustrated at school, act out, or have what’s called “school refusal” – many different ways to alert adults that something might be getting in the way of their learning success.
